NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15 Review: Liabilities

Damn! The grand experiment isn't over yet!

Those who thought the return of Hetty meant things would return to normal were greatly disappointed by developments on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15.

We found out, for example, that Mosley outranks Hetty. How is that possible?

Still in Charge - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15

Also, apparently there were no repercussions for Mosley authorizing the rescue mission of Hetty without clearing with her bosses. Maybe that high-falutin' title she brought out this episode meant she didn't have to get it cleared with anybody.

When I heard Mosley was an executive assistant director, I figured she was a replacement for Granger, who was Hetty's assistant. I thought she was just filling in until Hetty got back, and would move down to her regular role.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 14 Review: Goodbye Vietnam

Now it turns out that she's someone just south of Director Vance and is Hetty's boss despite Hetty's storied career and knowledge of where all the bodies are buried.

Even worse, apparently Mosley's mission is to blow up the Los Angeles unit of NCIS. This despite that, as Hetty pointed out. They're a family, which is one of the show's larger appeals to viewers.

This blow-it-up-for-the-hell-of-it storyline didn't work on Criminal Minds recently, and it shouldn't work here.

Finding the Target - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15

If it's going to be canceled, cancel it. All good things eventually come to an end, as happened to all the many variations of CSI and most of the Law & Orders. There's absolutely no need to ravage it first!

Here's hoping that Hetty can pull another rabbit of a hat (or blackmail somebody) to save the team.

Other than the above revolting development, there was quite a lot else happening. For example, this episode tied up not one, not two, but three dangling storylines, quite an accomplishment.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 14

First was what was the truth about the creepy Stiger couple on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 3?

That result felt incomplete way back then, and Callen vowed to keep looking into it.

It turned out that Lynn Stiger was an innocent. The way you tell that is because she was shot, then blown up in her husband Keith's fishing cabin.

Keith, on the other hand, not so much. He was a North Korean sleeper agent. I never got that vibe from him. I was going with opportunistic sleaze instead.

Finding Granger's Daughter - NCIS: Los Angeles

But no, it turns out Keith, aided by a pack of anonymous Asian thugs, was building a giant bomb out of ammonium nitrate and a couple other chemicals, which was going to be set off somewhere in LA.

That's where dangling storyline No. 2 comes in: Jennifer Kim.

For those who may have forgotten, Jennifer was introduced on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 7 Episode 11 as the North Korean sleeper agent who was also the daughter Granger never knew he had.

Related: CBS Cheat Sheet: Is Criminal Minds Really In Danger?!

Well, it turned out that Jennifer was bored out of her skull by WitSec, living in a rural area away from civilization. She was willing to help out Sam and Callen and risk life and limb in exchange for some quality New York-style pizza. That sounds reasonable to me.

Jennifer didn't have much rust on her, as she was able to gain information simply by threatening a soft local contact.

That resulted in the four main members of the NCIS team taking on Stiger and about a dozen of his thugs (it's hard to count with bullets flying) in the tunnels of LA. Sam's bomb-defusing skills returned, and LAPD was saved.

Because, really, again the case was secondary to what was happening around it.

Change of Scenery - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15

For example, we found out that Hidoko came west for a fresh start after her hero husband (Hetty's words) was killed. I'd figured she batted for the other team this whole time. So she's less of a mystery now.

Then, there was the third dangling storyline: Whatever happened to Granger? It turned out he was buried on Jennifer's property, where he had died from Agent Orange after finally getting to know his daughter some. We all knew Granger wasn't coming back, but still, closure is important.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

Also, we now know why Mosley is so prickly toward everybody. She isn't there to make friends but to rebuild the team in her own image. I suppose Hidoko is part of that plan. Maybe Sydney Jones as well. But what else happens; who can say?

On another front, since Mosley can't seem to find her child with all her intelligence contacts, why not give the Meerkats a try? They've got hacker skills when they choose to use them, so why not? What's she got to lose?

Was Granger's daughter, Jennifer Kim, ready to help the team?

That was addressed on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15 when the former spy was pulled out of witness protection.

Change of Scenery - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15

The reason?

To help the team locate and underground spy who secured himself a wealthy array of bomb materials.

But things took a dramatic turn when it emerged that Jennifer could have a bigger connection to the villain than the team first thought.

Poor Callen can't catch a break.

His newly assembled family got torn asunder on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16.

I suppose that's one way to get rid of a storyline.

Pursuing Every Option - NCIS: Los Angeles

Yes, it took two-thirds of a season before Callen's recently discovered family of a father, a sister and a nephew was brought into the spotlight again.

Nikita, we hardly knew ye. After only two years and four episodes, it's back to the gulag for you. It hardly seems fair.

Related: CBS Sets Season Finale Dates For The Big Bang Theory, NCIS & MORE!

Nikita (it's hard to believe that's the same actor that once played Frank Furillo) just got caught up as a pawn in some international intrigue.

If I followed it correctly, the U.S. would swap Nikita to Iran for two photographers/maybe spies, and Iran, in turn, would send Nikita to Russia in exchange for some missiles and, I'm guessing, a draft choice to be named later.

When Callen asked the State Department stooge why they were doing this, he said to reunite a family. It's obvious that Callen's family of part-Russians didn't rate as well on the optics scale, so it was fine to break them up.

Quiet Prelude - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16

Would Russia actually go to all that trouble for a former spy?

I'd say yes, based on the former Russian spy, who had been living in Britain for decades, and his daughter recently being poisoned with a particularly Russian toxin. It's just another way of putting the fear of Putin in the West.

Now, back to the caper to save Nikita, which went oh so wrong.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 15 Review: Liabilities

As they have for at least half of the episodes during NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9, the OSP team tried to run an operation behind Mosley's back.

Since she's been sent there to assess the team, they truly don't do themselves any favors going rogue on a regular basis.

Only now they have Hetty to aid and abet these off-the-book missions, including providing briefcases of money from her Vietnam-era slush fund. She also came up with a somewhat viable "case" that would allow them freedom of movement.

Of course, Mosley quickly caught on to what the team was doing and let Hetty know. But she feigned ignorance to everyone else.

Trouble Coming - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16

So their ill-conceived plan was to abduct Anatoli Kirkin and offer him up in place of Nikita. If only it were that easy.

First, Kirkin had gone to ground, so they had to find him. So they started shaking trees to see what fell out.

Nell and Eric moved to their mobile lair, the taco truck, and tracked Kirkin's chiropractor hoping to find Kirkin's address. Meanwhile, Callen and Sam, eventually aided by Hidoko, went sniffing around for info from a rival Russian mobster.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 15

Later, Kensi and Deeks followed up on Nell and Eric's lead and got to meet Kirkin's latest boy toy, a Deeks lookalike (but with better tips). Then Kirkin himself drives in, making Deeks uncomfortable with all kinds of unwanted attention.

Naturally, both at the barber shop and Kirkin's mansion, firefights broke out. That's not the way to run a mission on the DL.

Long story short, Kirkin was in the wind again. Later on, after it was too late, Kensi and Deeks ran into him while walking Monty, and he revealed that he had taken over the mob again with funds he had embezzled from his rich boy toy. So he was back to being untouchable.

Family Drama - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16

Even when Callen offered Nikita a chance to go on the run, he refused. Instead, he went along with the trade, hoping to escape again and get back to his family. Alexandra was pissed, Jake heartbroken, and poor Callen is on the outs with the little bit of family he had left.

It is going to be interesting to watch Hetty and Mosley joust. Hetty has always worked behind the scenes and through back channels, but Mosley seems equally adept at that. Still, my money is on Hetty to come out on top, title or no title.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

I did feel bad for Hidoko, whom Mosley blasted because she helped out the others without running to Mosley first. Hidoko truly seems to want to be accepted by the OSP team and to not be seen as Mosley's snitch.

Is anything going to change over the last few episodes? Or is it going to continue to be the team sneaking around on Mosley, while she compiles evidence against them? Continuity is one thing. Repetition is another. Maybe they ought to try asking for permission first rather than forgiveness afterward.

To see the pattern develop, watch NCIS: Los Angeles online.

How could the team have handled this better? Can Hetty outmaneuver Mosley? Or is there another way to proceed?

Comment below.

Why was Callen's father arrested?

That was revealed on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16 when the Diplomatic Security Service went to great lengths to build a false narrative.

With time running out quickly, Callen utilized every resource available to him, and that meant the team was along for the ride.

After some digging, it emerged that it was all part of an exchange for American photographers being held hostage in Iran.

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17 Review: The Monster

OK, that was some weird shit for an NCIS episode.

A patchwork body, including parts from a Naval officer, was discovered on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17.

I thought it unusual that the team dropped a case seemingly partway through an episode, but surprise! That was just the beginning.

Putting On a Show - NCIS: Los Angeles

Of course, there was some Mosley madness going on in the midst of the case.

Everyone on the OSP team was on heightened alert as Mom and Grandmom were fighting in the office upstairs.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16 Review: Warriors of Peace

Mosley's playing "Spin the Pairings" didn't help matters any. She just had to break up Densi.

Let's assess the pairings. First, let's look at Sam and Kensi. They worked fine together, once Sam established who was in charge. Kensi chafed at that a little bit, since she's used to calling the shots with Deeks. But, all in all, they had been teammates for long enough that there were few issues.

Odd Couple - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17

Deeks and Hidoko, in other words, the two that were left, didn't mesh as well. Deeks' motormouth style is an acquired taste, and Hidoko seems to play everything close to the vest. It's nice to see someone not embrace Deeks' shtick.

I have to admit that I'd been wondering about the Japanese surname for somebody that doesn't look remotely Japanese, so I wasn't surprised that Deeks went there.

Of course, they got into it about Mosley. Deeks dislikes her because he fears he's about to be sent back to LAPD, while Hidoko is fiercely loyal to her, even if we've been given absolutely no reason why. Because Mosley gave her a fresh start after her husband was killed, or is it something more?

Fortunately, all the awkwardness of the new teams quickly faded into the background as they got pulled into some bizarre developments.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

The missing Naval officer was dating a woman from the Chinese consulate. But, it turned out, both were actually NSA operatives. And she was able to track him with the devices they had both had implanted on their own initiative.

That's how Mandy was able to unintentionally lead Deeks and Hidoko to the Frankenstein body which included her lover.

At the same time, Sam and Kensi discovered a murderer who had mutilated his victims working at an auto-repair shop. However, surveillance footage gave him an alibi.

OSP was soon washing their hands of this strangeness since the FBI was already investigating similar bodies and the case had no implications for national security.

Right? Wrong.

It was a horrifying twist when they found out that the garage workers they interviewed were all imposters, setting up an alibi for the killer. And all that was left when they got back to the garage was another patchwork body.

So, for those who wanted another dangling storyline for the rest of the season, there you go. It seems more like an X-Files or Criminal Minds concept, but whatever.

Weapons Search - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17

This left the odd pairing of Mosley and Callen.

It was amusing when Callen, who thought he was about to be fired, instead ended up working on a high-profile weapons case with the ATF.

Mosley was her usual imperious self when she tried to run roughshod over the ATF agent in charge. Still, Callen noticed the desperate edge to her behavior and got her to admit, to a degree, why this case was personal to her.

This case also wrapped up rather precipitously. Naturally, Williams got away, leading to another dangling storyline.

Command Center - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17

But another worthwhile development happened. Mosley finally turned somewhat human. Up until now, I couldn't believe someone with seemingly no people skills had risen so far in the NCIS hierarchy.

Hetty convinced Mosley to open up to her squad if they are ever going to trust her. So, over Scotch. First, she told Callen that he was the best agent with whom she had ever worked. Then she admitted that Williams had absconded with their son and that she hadn't seen him for five years.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 16

Did this episode make Mosley a more sympathetic character? Yeah, I guess so. Still, there's all her dictatorial behavior over the past 16 episodes to un-remember.

It took Granger a while to come around to the OSP way of doing things. But then, he and Hetty had a history. So maybe she and Hidoko can fit in too.

So when do we get back to these storylines?

It's hard to tell. NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18 appears to be Eric-centric, then there's the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 15. So it will be a few weeks away.

To re-assess Mosley, watch NCIS: Los Angeles online.

How did you like the new pairings? How do you feel about Mosley now? Did this episode represent a shift in Season 9? Comment below.

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18 Review: Vendetta

Anna finally returned. But how long before she's back again will be really hard to say.

That's because of the events during a team-up between NCIS and ATF on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18.

Eric Goes Undercover - NCIS: Los Angeles

More of that later. But first, props to Eric. He went undercover and didn't blow up anything.

As soon as Hetty intoned, "What's the worst that could happen?," you just knew that many things would. "It's his turn" truly wasn't reason enough to send him out into the field.

Sam and Callen did their best to help him roll back his nerves.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 17 Review: The Monster

Based on what showed up in Eric's file, I couldn't blame Mosley for double-guessing Hetty, Hetty's cake metaphor notwithstanding.

Still, playing the IT guy wasn't much of a stretch. That part he could do with his eyes closed.

All he had to do is straighten out what he had messed up earlier, then talk to Leigha privately about Abram, who was back in the country for the first time since NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 5.

Paying Respects - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18

I really expected more from Eric. But Leigha's firm had little to do with Abram's master plan until near the very end.

No one at the firm bought Eric as an agent undercover, and I truly didn't blame them. Hidoko had to clear the room for him.

That was why he was still in the building when Abram and company arrived. Eric did manage to type really slowly waiting for the cavalry to get there. I thought he would do something like setting up the sprinklers by sending the appropriate command.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 17

No, instead it was just the obligatory firefight. At least all those shooter games paid off for Eric, as he was able to take out one of Abram's henchmen before the professionals brought the shooting to a close.

This was little Eric did that for which he could be faulted. At the same time, I don't think this outing will earn him more opportunities. He just doesn't have that killer edge which Nell has.

This episode was as much, if not more, about Callen and Anna as it was about Eric.

It appeared there is a fissure forming between Callen and Anna. Their jobs keep them busy and they are drifting apart.

On a Mission - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18

So that made for a wicked awkward air when Anna and her aw-shucks ATF partner ended up in the same room as Callen, Sam, and Arkady.

First off, I have to admit I'm up for any excuse to have Arkady drop by. He's kind of the Huggy Bear of NCIS: Los Angeles, brightening up any scene he's in. He can even make a bath sheet and a head wrap work for him.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

Take, for example, the surveillance video of a drunk Arkady singing "Hetty Davis Eyes." That's sheer gold.

Granted, with Arkady, the first question that must be asked is "What's in it for him?"

But this time, he only wanted to help Vladlena, of whom he's obviously grown quite fond. He kept pushing until NCIS discovered there was something to his concerns.

On Stakeout - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18

It was quite the scheme the ATF had uncovered, with Abram stealing cigarettes, converting them into cash back in Ukraine, then using that cash for weapons, or whatever.

But I was wondering if that part was just a scam, to misdirect NCIS and ATF, like the exchange of Arkady for Leigha. Was the main idea to transfer funds from Leigha's firm to his offshore account? It would have been simple to convince someone there to send the money under threat of death.

Even before he broke Vladlena for what she knew, he seemed to be a step ahead for the law. How else would he know where Vladlena's ambulance was going, in order to intercept it?

Related: CBS Cheat Sheet: Is Criminal Minds Really in Danger?!

Too bad he couldn't anticipate Anna shooting him. I'm not really sure why she did that, other than he had threatened Arkady.

But with Abram having no weapon, how will Anna be cleared, even with Callen backing her up? I'm guessing that will be a story for another episode, probably next season.

I think she's good for Callen, and I'd like to see them remain together. With his stateside family recently dissolving in NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 16, Callen needs some stability outside of work.

And once Anna gets suspended from the ATF, they should have lots of time to hang.

To catch up on the season during the hiatus caused by the Academy of Country Music Awards, watch NCIS: Los Angeles online.

Sam's year of adjustment continued.

He had become too close to a former druglord on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19.

That decision nearly cost him and Hidoko everything.

Uncover Operation - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19

Ever since his wife Michelle's death on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 23, Sam has been, understandably, trying to figure out his new life without her.

Some choices have been pretty harmless, such as living on a boat and adopting a sea lion as an unofficial pet.

Related: CBS Renewals: Which Major Show is Missing?

Others have been more questionable, such as getting close to King, the druglord he captured on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 17.

It seems that King has become Sam's non-work confidant, the person with whom he shares his feelings because we've seen damn little of that on the job. Just the opposite, in fact.

King, who seemed to be in some form of witness protection, appeared worthy of his trust until she set him up for a ruthless narco-terrorist.

Ten Million in Bitcoin - NCIS: Los Angeles

We got to see rearranged pairings again this week, in part because of Anna's shooting of Sokolov on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18.

I figured there was more to come on that because in no way was that, to use the TV cop parlance, a righteous shoot. Even though it happens offscreen, it sure seemed like she shot him in cold blood,

So, Callen was tied up being grilled by ATF about the shooting. That meant Sam got partnered with Hidoko on an undercover assignment.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 18 Review: Vendetta

That was fine, because, unlike her mentor Mosley, Hidoko gets along with everyone, even Deeks, who can be a challenge. She's a consummate professional, although apparently a little short on field experience.

We finally got the lowdown on the death of Hidoko's husband. That was very sad, their getting married just before he died. I guess she felt she could share that with Sam because he too had recently suffered the loss of a spouse.

Backup Sniper - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19

When she got shot, I figured the powers that be were going for the cheap shock by killing her off. But, nah, instead fashionable Kevlar saved the day.

Surprisingly, the pairing of Callen and Deeks also worked. Callen needed Deeks' not-requested advice on how to handle the Anna situation. And Deeks needed to hear Callen's telling him not to run away from his calling.

Hey, Deeks mentioned the wedding again. Might it possibly happen this season? Maybe at the end of a shootout in the finale, with Sam performing the ceremony? Internet licensing, y'all.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 18

It was just two guys sitting around shooting the shit in the "Roach Coach" and a bar, but it was what they both needed at the time.

Kensi and Nell are always a good pairing. I liked their tough cop/smart cop interrogation of the robbery suspect. Nell did homeless nearly as well as Deeks does, although their backup of Sam and Hidoko was marginal. Hidoko probably survived because of it, but Sam still got abducted.

What should we make of the Sam/King relationship?

Captive Agent - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19

They both used each other to get to Stone. After she put Sam in harm's way, King rescued him, and frankly herself, by shooting Stone and his henchmen. How did Stone reach the position he held by putting guns in the hands of people who benefited from his being dead?

It's obvious they both care for each other, but now King (Dana?) has put herself back on the wrong side of the law.

I'm sure most viewers would like Sam to find love again. I'd vote for Nicole, the Secret Service agent last seen on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 2. She and Sam are at least on the same side of the law.

But Sam and King make for a much better narrative, him falling for a bad girl turned good then bad again. Shakespeare wrote the path to true love never did run smooth, and that's never changed.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

Mosley actually offered to help King as much as she could, but she also cautioned Sam to get his head on straight, essentially. Holding onto King may give him more headaches than she's worth.

Mosley was not only helpful to Sam, and she gave Eric a ringing pep talk. This has been, like, two straight episodes when she hasn't been entirely annoying.

Hetty was MIA this episode. You don't suppose she was the donor for Mosley's humanity transplant, do you?

No, it was probably just some time off for Linda Hunt after being featured more prominently in the past five episodes.

To catch up as the season winds down, watch NCIS: Los Angeles online.

Well, that was maybe 10 minutes worth of entertainment.

We got a ho-hum case of the week paired with some much-needed follow-up on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20.

The main storyline was the case of the week, such as it was.

Out in the Forest - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20

The good news was that Mosley didn't mess with the teams this time around.

So that meant Callen and Sam, aided by Nell (a pregnant Renee Felice Smith, which explains the layered look), searching for a missing classified doohickey, while Deeks and Kensi, helped by a hyper-caffeinated Eric, sought the inside man at the rocket manufacturer.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19 Review: Outside the Lines

The Densi and Eric pairing was the more fun of the two. I loved seeing Eric act like a little kid up until the time his space-geek self finally understood that he wasn't getting anywhere near Proxima's headquarters.

Fortunately, Eric was able to root out the true culprit based on his coding style. Seriously? Try to get that theory to stand up in a court of law. Fortunately, Donald folded up like a cheap suit, so they didn't have to put that to the test.

I'm surprised that Donald lasted as long as did he before he got exposed, as nervous as he was.

Interrogation Woes - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20

What an ingenious plan Deeks had so that he and Kensi could back up Donald! Kensi as a bartender is old hat, But Deeks as a golfer was something different. I figured he just did water sports.

And wasn't fencing with golf clubs pretty much inevitable, leading to Deeks' bad pun? I guess that's par for the course.

Meanwhile, out in the Angeles Forest, Callen and Sam had their own problems.

No one was concerned when a three-man search party goes missing? Good thing Sam and Callen are used to, well, stretching their orders. That was the only way it became apparent that the search effort had been infiltrated.

I was glad to find out that the campers in the first scene hadn't gotten blown up, although the guy might have been happier if that had happened.

On the Home Front - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20

I'm sure the campers, Vanessa and Dave, just thought they were being helpful when they broadcast the location of the rocket's payload. Too bad they both couldn't do the smart thing and bug out, as Callen had suggested.

But there wouldn't have been the drama and brief firefight if they had done that.

Callen and Sam rightly recognized there was more to the mission than retrieval of the payload. The would-be thieves had too-good intel, so there had to be someone on the inside who was involved as well.

Who out there picked out the super-helpful Gates as the traitorous inside woman at the search site? It's always the one everyone least suspects. It certainly wasn't the officious mission director, worrying his next promotion had just blown up with the rocket.

Related: CBS Renewals: Which Major Show is Missing?

So Gates was running interference, slowly down the search as much as possible, so that her boss's men could get to the device first.

And the only way she was caught was pretty much process of elimination. Gates was last seen with the package and was now missing, so, therefore...

What's the old Sherlock Holmes line: "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth."

(BTW: Elementary returns at 10 p.m. Monday, April 30, on CBS.)

Hetty Helps a Friend - NCIS: Los Angeles

Next, there was Hetty and Harris Keane spending time together, given short shrift for a case that truly wasn't rocket science.

Not surprisingly, Harris was having trouble getting re-acclimated after spending decades as a prisoner of war.

Instead of getting help, he was writing letters of atonement to the families of people that he had killed.

Fortunately, by taking Harris to see George Nelson's grave, Hetty got him to understand that all of those exposed to Orange Agent during the Vietnam War have only a short time left and need to make the most of it

By episode's end, Harris wasn't exactly embracing life, but at least he was contemplating calling Nate to talk about what he was feeling. I'm sure we'll never see that session, but it would certainly be a start.

Hey, the writers may finally have figured out how to use Mosley best. She gave out the assignments, made a pithy observation about Eric, then faded into the background.

If you don't give the haters something to hate, maybe, just maybe, Mosley can be salvaged.

Who was behind a failed rocket launch?

That was revealed on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20 as Callen, Sam and Nell ventured into the Angeles Forest to search for the parts of it.

However, the mission took a dangerous turn when it emerged that there was a top-secret government device.

Meanwhile, Hetty tried to help Keane acclimate to life in the states, but did her plan emerge as a success?

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21 Review: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Was this episode about the future of NCIS: Los Angeles?

Maybe that's a little strong, but NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21 did hint about changes being afoot.

The case of the week, centering on a Marine whose life had taken some bad turns, definitely offered the message that life is short.

Partnering With the FBI - NCIS: Los Angeles

It was heartbreaking that Gabe Schroeder, a decorated veteran, had suffered setbacks, but died trying to protect people from a deadly synthetic opioid called carfentanyl, which killed him.

Frankly, for having such a serious message, the episode carried a lighthearted tone throughout, and that worked.

That was largely thanks to Zoe Morris, the overly confident rookie FBI agent introduced back on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 21, which also included Hetty's old Vietnam War colleagues. That was good stuff.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 20 Review: Reentry

Zoe is an acquired taste. She's already a legend in her own mind. But I suppose that's the only way for such a tiny woman to hold her own in the FBI.

And didn't she do a lovely job making Callen and Sam feel old? Every other word out of her mouth was an abbreviation. She was everything about the millennials that their elders hate.

Anyway, Zoe decided to give her old friends Sam and Callen, who she abused in her first appearance, a favor by bringing a case to them, which, it turns out, wasn't hers to offer.

FBI Rookie - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21

Unsanctioned was the phrase Mosley used. It was the case of a John Doe Zoe thought was a Marine who died from being exposed to a deadly drug.

Hmmm, taking up a case mostly on a hunch, then bullshitting others to join in. Who does that sound like?

As Hetty pointed out, practically the entire OSP, starting with Callen. Pot, meet kettle. Hetty herself isn't exempt from this blanket statement. She just does it more subtly.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 20

Plus, it helps if you're right, as Zoe was proven to be by the drug-laced morgue sheet in which the Marine, later identified was Gabe, had been wrapped.

Everyone rightfully quickly got invested, especially after they learned Gabe's story.

That's despite being handicapped with Gus, the incompetent gunman captured coming out of Gabe's apartment, being the sole lead. It didn't help that he lied severely and a mile a minute.

Befuddled Agent - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21

Still, he got them where they needed to be, a bit at a time. In the end, they got in the obligatory, full-team firefight (OK, Hidoko wasn't there.) and pulled out that handy-dandy spike strip in a case.

It was fitting that Raul killed himself with a package of his own poison.

The story of Gabe, which ended with his proper military sendoff, just magnified thoughts that some team members were already thinking.

Related: CBS Renewals: Which Major Show is Missing?

Let's start with Deeks. He was at full motormouth mode, which can grate, but he was making salient points about his future.

He's been hinting all season that he doesn't expect to be at NCIS for the long haul and that he would be just as happy doing something less dangerous. And that he would like to take Kensi along with him for the ride.

Deeks has also foreseen a time after he and Kensi eventually get married, that one of them will have to leave the unit, and he certainly wouldn't ask that of her.

Moment of Truth - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21

So, as the episode title suggests, and Deeks also talked about earlier, he wants to run a bar. This episode, he finally unveiled his plan to Kensi, who just laughed, chalking it up as another one of his legendarily bad moneymaking schemes. Such as French running, learning French while running.

But Kensi came around when he brought everyone, except Hetty and Mosley, to the bar which he was interested in buying. I guess love is blind. Please let this not become a running joke, such as the Italian restaurant which McGarrett and Danny are planning on Hawaii Five-0.

Boo to Eric to putting Nell, usually the most upbeat of the team members, in a funk with his death-knell alarm. Still, it did put them in a mood to think more about life outside the office, to plan to travel and see the world.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

And Hetty, sweet name-dropping Hetty, offering to let them stay at her Majorca villa, where she had hung out with Picasso.

It was apparent when Hidoko was the third wheel with Densi that she needs a partner. How about pulling Nell out of Ops? Or Anna, after she gets drummed out of ATF for shooting Sokolov? Talk about being punished for doing a good deed.

And this marks three consecutive episodes that Mosley has been tolerable. Maybe she has figured how that Hetty was right and she would need her team if she's ever going to recover her son.

Who murdered a marine with nerve gas?

That was the big question on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21 as the forensic investigation sent the team down various different avenues.

With that, NCIS and the FBI joined forces to find a way to take down the killer.

However, it quickly became apparent that there could be more victims popping up along the way.

Did the team find out all the details before it was too late?

It was another followup and Anna going deeper into a hole.

In other words, NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 22 was a bridge episode to get us to the BIG, TWO-PART SEASON FINALE.

Why be subtle? The show's powers that be certainly weren't with the preview at the end.

Dead Ends - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 22

This episode was another one taking viewers back to a previous episode in which things seems largely tied up. In this case, it brought up Peruvian counterfeiter Alfonso Marca, from NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 2.

First, Claudia Diaz, Marca's adoptive daughter, who made a strong impression in that earlier episode, got killed in the first scene. Way to wipe out a possible recurring villain.

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 21

The next target was Nicole DeChamps, who was a Secret Service agent who recruited Sam into her undercover sting in the earlier episode.

Callen finished off that ensuing firefight with all well-thought-out explosion from shooting the propane tanks. That also killed off any leads.

Kensi and Deeks tracked down the only visitor that Diaz had had in prison, who gave her a coded message that yielded nothing, then delivered gallons of resin, which was taken to an out-of-town ranch. Mosley thought the resin meant Marca was printing yen.

To the Rescue - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 22

Sam and Nicole interviewed Silva, the only other person left from the earlier episode. He eventually told them the ranch was used for storage and an occasional rest stop for Marca's tactical team.

Longshot story: Kensi and Deeks walked into a trap and ran for cover, then got rescued by Sam, Callen, and Nicole. Dramatic, but easy-peasy.

Then, in a twist, we found out that some rival of Marca's had had Diaz murdered, to pit Marca and the Americans against each other. It was another haphazardly wrapped-up case, that will rear its head again next season.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 21 Review: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

But mostly this was an episode about relationships.

Let's start with Sam and Nicole.

Since Sam gave her a pep talk since then, Nicole, who was disenchanted in the Secret Service, moved over to NCIS and was now with NCIS: San Diego, which I'm guessing isn't about to become a spinoff.

End of the Road - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 22

I'll speculate again that maybe the plan is to have Nicole and Sam become an item a little way down the road. That would be a much better option than King, most recently from NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 19.

I know what you're thinking. Sam doesn't even have time to get his boat running. Why would he possibly get romantically entangled?

Well, it appears that Callen, and possibly Densi, will be getting un-entangled, so somebody has to step up. More on that later.

The most harmonious relationship right now is Sam and Callen. It was vintage, them sitting around and shooting the shit about such things as meditation and Sam's love of craftsmanship. Why mess with that any more than necessary?

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

A surprisingly smooth relationship is Mosley and Hetty. After pulling rank shortly after Hetty's return from Vietnam, Mosley has seemingly seen the light, appreciating the tiny font of wisdom in front of her. Maybe that's why she's been tolerable.

Then there's Deeks and Kensi: More wedding talk, more life-threatening situations.

With two episodes left, I'd say there are two choices: have the damn wedding or blow up Densi (figuratively). Based on the preview, it could well be the latter.

That would create new, dynamic tension for next season. But it would also result in a viewers' revolt.

Internal Affairs - NCIS: Los Angeles

Also looking troublesome right now is Callen and Anna.

Of course, Callen has mishandled the whole being-supportive thing, trying to do it without actually contacting Anna in any way. After some of the things he's done, he's worried about legal niceties?

The message I took away from Anna's long, rambling talk with Callen is that she'll land on her feet, so Callen shouldn't worry about trying to make his story protect her.

Related: Ch-ch-changes: How to Handle Evolving Casts

That's good because when ATF Internal Affairs was interviewing him, he was dancing for all he was worth and not doing a particularly good job of it. I fear the worst for Anna, and Anna and Callen.

SPOILER ALERT: So where's all this headed? Based on the preview, Deeks wants Kensi to run away from NCIS, and she's not agreeable. So, no wedding? Also, the team goes on an off-the-books mission (is there any other kind?) to retrieve Mosley's son from her criminal ex.

CBS Fall Schedule: Which Show Is Replacing Scorpion?

CBS is making some big changes as it heads into the 2018-2019 season.

The network today announced its fall schedule, and while there is stability on some nights, there are big changes on others.

With Kevin Can Wait and Superior Donuts canceled, Mondays will go back to having a one-hour comedy block, followed by two dramas.

Magnum PI

In fact, the Monday night line-up will be dominated by two hours of new shows. The Neighborhood has been granted the lead-off spot, leading into Happy Together.

The highly anticipated Magnum P.I. reboot has landed the 9/8c hour, and that will lead into Bull, which will replace Scorpion. Yes, that's a big shake-up, but will it be enough to compete with the other networks?

Quite possibly.

Related: ABC Fall Schedule: Can Nathan Fillion Break Tuesday Curse?

The only change on Tuesdays is in the 9/8c hour. FBI will move in since Bull is on the move.

Wednesdays are unchanged with Survivor, SEAL Team and Criminal Minds keeping their slots from the 2017-208 season. All three turned in respectable ratings, so they were widely expected to stick together.

Murphy Brown Tall

The only change on Thursdays is that the Murphy Brown revival will take over for Life in Pieces, which returns at midseason. The biggest surprise is that Murphy Brown never got the 9/8c slot.

However, Mom has been rating well in that slot over the last few years, so the network is likely looking to see if Murphy Brown can give S.W.A.T. a boost.

Fridays are unchanged, and that makes sense when you consider the stability of the shows throughout the season.

On Sundays, God Friended Me will fill in for Instinct, which is expected to return at midseason.

GOD FRIENDED ME CBS

“When you have a primetime lineup that won the season while competing against the Super Bowl and the Winter Olympics on another network, you look to keep your core schedule mostly intact, while making strategic moves to help grow nights,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment.

Related: The Originals Spinoff Ordered to Series!

“We’ve maintained stability across winning nights, while adding some important new pieces to our Monday night lineup. And, next year, we’re positioned to build on this success with the addition of these exciting new shows and primetime events, such as ‘The AFC Championship Game,’ ‘Super Bowl LIII,’ ‘The Grammy Awards’ and the NCAA Final Four.”

Al told, have a look at the full line-up below.

That didn't wrap up much of anything, did it?

After creating chaos on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 23, Mosley got her son back on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 24.

But at what cost?

A Firefight - NCIS: Los Angeles

I guess we'll be waiting until next fall to find out the answer to that question.

Maybe this will finally get Mosley reassigned. Five agents missing and assumed dead on an off-the-books operation has got to be a career ender, at the very least.

So, let's look at all the missteps that led to that ending.

Related: NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 22 Review: Venganza

I mean, the Vietnam mission to rescue Hetty on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 14 was better planned and executed, halfway around the world. I bet the team wished they had Hetty's geriatric Vietnam buddies in Mexico with them.

Starting out with a firefight rather than the usual scene of Deeksian stream of consciousness about nothing was a welcome change of pace.

That opener also gave the team an unnecessary handicap, a wounded Sam, although it didn't slow down him, or the team, very much.

Losing Battle - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 23

If the powers that be had been of a mind to, they could have wrapped up this storyline within the two hours, with but a lot less of the intra-squad bickering.

But once a series has been renewed, where's the incentive to do that? It's cliffhanger time, come hell or high water.

The entire first hour seemed to be feeding off the adrenaline of the opening firefight. Mosley, once she found where her ex, Spencer, was at, was barreling over everyone, protocol and regulations be damned.

So what if she had been a stickler for those throughout much of the season. Hypocritical much?

Related: Watch NCIS: Los Angeles Online: Season 9 Episode 22

The whole argument for and against a rescue mission to retrieve Derrick really came down to those who feel parental (Sam, Hetty, Kensi) versus those who don't (Callen, Deeks).

Was this just an hyper-elevated custody battle or something more?

I'd argue it's the latter. Williams took his son out of the country without Mosley's permission, so it's parental abduction at the very least. Then there's the whole him being a weapons dealer thing, so he's on somebody's radar (the ATF, for sure) for illegal activities.

Mosley was morally right to try to get back her son. But to invade a foreign country, one of the most violent on the planet, with no intel and no resources, was just plain reckless.

Rescue Mission - NCIS: Los Angeles Season 9 Episode 24

Also, it should have been voluntarily, instead of getting everyone on the team involved, in most cases without knowing why she was acting psychotic.

You know things are off kilter when Deeks was the big-picture thinker. Deeks the lawyer pointed out all the reasons legally that what they were doing was wrong. That got him fired for his contributions.

He also chose the wrong moment entirely to have a serious talk with Kensi about what their future holds. You would have thought they would have had this talk previously. That got him un-engaged for his bad timing.

Related: Get CBS All Access via Amazon Channels for Hit Shows, Exclusive Originals & Live TV!

Was that the end of Densi? I seriously doubt it. Still, there's now an excuse to push back the wedding well into NCIS: Los Angeles Season 10. Yay! More intermittent wedding planning!

But at least Deeks still had everyone's back, even Mosley's, once he got the full picture of what her deal was.

Now on to that half-baked rescue mission.

Hidoko went in as the self-appointed advance scout, never to be seen again. I haven't minded Hidoko, and I'm hoping she didn't get killed off so perfunctorily.

When you bring in a character played by Max Martini from The Unit, I expect an action hero out in the field, not a supply sergeant. There must be more to come from him ... next season.

Heading to Mexico - NCIS: Los Angeles

While I understand a great part of the team's appeal is their ability to improvise, that was severely taxed on this mission. Four agents, only two of whom spoke the language, in a country full of cartels and corrupt police and military.

With no intel, it was a string of half-assed strategies. I liked Callen's idea of playing dead, then driving into the compound in disguise and unleashing every bit of weaponry they had. Escaping on horseback was a lovely touch.

Related: CBS Fall Schedule

But, news flash, they're up against an army on the army's home ground. It's little wonder they ended up in a burning hulk.

It looks like Hetty was right when she said that Mosley would put all those agents in jeopardy if it would get her son back.

The good news is that the show is set for the first month of next season. Who's dead? Who's injured and how badly? What's the fallout? Is Densi still a thing?

Let's just hope things smooth out and aren't nearly as dysfunctional afterward.
